How Robotic Surgery Works

The surgeon sits at a console a few feet from the patient and controls slender instruments passed through keyhole incisions. The system translates the surgeon's hand movements into precise, tremor-free movements inside the body, while a high-definition camera gives a magnified 3D view.

The robot does not operate on its own. Every movement is made by the surgeon, which is why training and experience in the specific cancer operation matter more than the machine.

Operations Performed Robotically

OperationUsed for
Radical prostatectomyLocalised and selected locally advanced Prostate Cancer
Partial nephrectomyKidney tumours where the kidney can be preserved
Radical nephrectomyLarge or central kidney tumours
Radical cystectomyMuscle-invasive and high-risk Bladder Cancer
NephroureterectomyCancer of the ureter and renal pelvis
Pelvic lymph node dissectionStaging and treatment in Prostate, Bladder and Penile Cancer
Adrenalectomy and selected retroperitoneal surgeryAdrenal and retroperitoneal tumours

Benefits and Limitations

Less blood loss

Fine control of small vessels reduces bleeding and the need for transfusion.

Faster recovery

Smaller incisions mean less pain, a shorter hospital stay and an earlier return to activity.

Precision near nerves

Magnified views help preserve the nerves and muscles that control continence and erections.

Organ preservation

Suturing inside the body is easier, making kidney-sparing surgery possible for more complex tumours.

Limitations: long-term cancer control depends mainly on the stage of the cancer and the completeness of surgery, not on the approach. Robotic Surgery costs more than open surgery, and it is not suitable for every patient. Alternatives are always discussed.

Is Robotic Surgery Right for You?

Suitability depends on the type and stage of cancer, previous abdominal operations, heart and lung fitness, and body build. For some patients, open surgery, radiation, ablation or surveillance is the better choice. The recommendation is made after reviewing your scans and discussing your priorities.

Preparing for Surgery and Recovering

  • A pre-operative assessment checks fitness for anaesthesia and reviews medicines, especially blood thinners.
  • Walking and drinking usually begin on the day of surgery or the next day.
  • Most patients go home in two to five days, depending on the operation.
  • Light activities resume in two to three weeks; heavy lifting is avoided for about six weeks.
  • The final pathology report is reviewed together, and a written follow-up plan is provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the robot perform the surgery?

No. The surgeon controls every movement from the console. The robot is a precise instrument, not an independent operator.

Is Robotic Surgery better for cancer cure than open surgery?

Cancer control depends mainly on the stage of the cancer and the completeness of surgery. Robotic Surgery mainly improves recovery and precision.

Will robotic prostatectomy protect continence and erections?

It helps with precise dissection around the nerves and sphincter, but recovery also depends on age, cancer extent and whether nerves can be spared.

Is Robotic Surgery covered by insurance?

Many health insurance policies in India cover Robotic Surgery. A cost estimate is provided after consultation.

How long is the hospital stay?

Usually two to five days, depending on the operation and recovery.

Is Robotic Surgery suitable for everyone?

No. Previous surgery, fitness for anaesthesia and the type of tumour all affect suitability, and alternatives are discussed openly.

Patient Experiences

Shared by patients and families treated by Dr. Anshuman Singh.

“

Last year on 25th May, 2024, I underwent robotic prostate surgery performed by Dr. Anshuman Singh and I couldn’t be more grateful for the exceptional care and expertise I received. From my very first consultation, Dr. Anshuma took the time to clearly explain my diagnosis, treatment options, and what to expect before, during, and after the surgery.
